Banks generally play a crucial role in the economic growth of a nation and bank loans are one of the most common finance sources for projects. Project loans are always accompanied by risk; and with an increase in the amount of project loans, the risks associated with it also increases. The main aim of this study was to assess the investment project loan monitoring and follow-up practice of Awash Bank. Additionally, the credit appraisal practice of the Bank and factors that lead to loan default were analyzed in the study. The study used both primary and secondary data collection methods. The primary data was collected using questionnaires and interview while secondary data was derived from the Bank’s annual reports and other relevant documents. The target population for the study was technical employees of the Bank who work in the credit appraisal and credit portfolio monitoring and follow-up function. For this study 37 respondents were identified and completed response was gathered from 28 of them. To analyze the quantitative data, descriptive analysis was employed in the study using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28. The findings show that the project loan monitoring and follow-up is related with loan performance and the bank has a periodic and standardized monitoring and follow up. The Study recommends that the Bank should evaluate borrowers project monitoring skill, develop the technical capacity of the Bank’s staff and limit management intervention in credit appraisal and approval. Key words: Project Monitoring, Project Follow-up, Credit Appraisal
