Awareness on obstetric fistula and its associated factors among reproductive age women in Asella town Oromia Region, Ethiopia

Abstract

Background: Obstetric fistula is an abnormal connection between the vagina, rectum and/or bladder, which leads to continuous urinary or fecal incontinence, and Vesico-vaginal Fistula (VVF) is the commonest type of obstetric fistula. Awareness is the state of being conscious of something. Currently Percentage of reproductive age women who have ever heard of obstetrical fistula is lowest in Oromia Region (28.6%).Objective: To assess awareness on obstetric fistula and its associated factors among reproductive age women in Asella town Oromia region, 2018. Methods: Community based cross sectional study design was conducted from March 01-30/2018 using adapted structured questionnaires.Systematic sampling technique was used to assign households, all kebeles were included in the study. Kebele registration was used as a sampling frame. Data was entered and cleaned using Epi data version3.1 and analyzed by SPSS version 21. Both descriptive and regressions was computed. Result: The mean age of participants were 30.26 years old and 63.5% of respondents are married. The study showed those who had no history of pregnancy were 60% less likely to have good awareness on obstetrics fistula prevention than their counter parts (AOR=0.399:95% CI (0.241-0.661)). Those who lived above thirty (30)minutes foot distance from health facility were 65% less likely to have good awareness than those living near to health center(AOR=0.355:95% CI (0.212-0.594)). In addition, awareness to birth related complication (AOR=0.458:95% CI (0.368-0.678)) and women education (AOR=0.162:95% CI (0.081-0.364)) had significant association with awareness on obstetric fistula. Conclusion and Recommendation: The finding indicates 50% of women’s have Poor awareness on obstetrics fistula in the area. Educational level of women, exposure for pregnancy, awareness on obstetrics complications, and distance to the nearby health center were the factors associated with awareness of women on obstetrics fistula. Health office of the city and Nongovernmental organizations, which are engaged in reproductive health program in the area, should give special attention for women to increase their awareness on obstetrics fistula.
