The main objective of this thesis is to assess and describe the role of labor union in the industrial relation in the case of „Berhanena Selam‟ Printing Enterprise. A descriptive research and both quantitative & qualitative methods were applied in this thesis. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of the labor union in safeguarding the interest of the employees and resolving conflicts in the Enterprise. The total population of the labor union was 777 but due to time and budget constraint 125 members were selected among the total population of the labor union members by using non-probability quota and convenient sampling methods. 125 labor union members were asked to complete a self-administrated questionnaires with 20 likert scale questions and two open-ended questions. 98 qualified questionnaires were collected among 125 distributed questioners. Those closed-ended questions are categorized in four groups based on the research questions. A face-to-face interview was conducted with the labor union leader on five major questions. The internal consistency and reliability of the questions in four groups were tested and the result showed a strong consistency. The results are presented in the form of tables using mean and percentages. Based on the major finding the labor union members had good altitude for their collective bargaining agreement but both the labor union and the management were weak in implementing and amending it. Since one of the major challenge of the labor union was management‟s interference in the labor union internal administration, the union could not protect its members‟ interests, settle down peaceful industrial relationships between employees and management. Generally, the enterprise‟s industrial relationships depend on the role of labor union, challenges of labor union, collective bargaining and proclamations.en_US
