Abstract
The general objective of this study has been to investigate the relationship
between the population pressure and agriculture in Misha woreda, Hadiya Zone,
SNNP. Specially, this study was concerned with the examination of the impact of
graving population on agriculture in view of Malthus, Neo-Malthusians and
Boserupian theories. Some demographic, socio-economic and cultural aspects
which determine agricultural activities were examined in the study. Qualitative
and quantitative approaches for data analysis were used based on descriptive
method to identify the population pressure that exerted on agricultural activities
in the household level. Although the area is in high potential cereal zone, the
analysis of the available data has seemingly revealed that the poor resource
base as compared to the requirement of the present human and livestock
population that characterize the l'itudy area. Based on the. sample survey, the
average land holding size is less than one hectare per households. The land
fragmentation is also main problem in the area, it is highly fragmented among
the households. The fact that farming tools and production techniques are
traditional and lack of access to farming technology in the area. The application
of farm inputs is very low with an average oxen possession of a half per
households. Fertilizer application is too very low and limited the average is
nearly one quintal per household and all these aspects taken together accounts
for the low agricultural production in the area.
