Abstract
In this study an attempt is made to measure and
compare the economic performance of state and peasant
farms through a case study method . The economic performance
of five state farms in Arsi are compared with
that of five peasant associations in the same region.
The principal sources of information for this study
are the primary data generated at farm level. Various
criteria are used to compare the performance of the
two farm categories. The empirical results of the study
reveal that despite all the priorities they enjoy,
state farms are performing poorly relative to the
traditional peasant farms. The root causes of inefficiencies
in the state farms are identified. Finally,
recommendations are made to improve efficiency in the
state farms.
