Abstract
The study is undertaken to Factors affecting geo-tourism development in Erta ale, North East
Ethiopia. In order to answer the research question both close ended and open ended
questionnaire were developed and distributed for one hundred international tourists and forty
tour operators. In addition to focus group discussion, interview and non participant observation
were tools for data collection. It relied on both primary and secondary data. The study is
expressed as a descriptive study with both qualitative and quantitative methodological
approaches. Therefore, both qualitative and quantitative types of method have been jointly
implemented.International tourists who had an experience of visiting Erta Ale active volcano, key informants
from Afar region culture and tourism office, local residents, tour guides selected using non
probability purposive sampling whereas tour operators were randomly selected from Addis
Ababa. After collecting the data, the qualitative data were analyzed through interpretive and
descriptive method. On the other hand, the qualitative data were analyzed with the help of
statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 16.0.
The finding revealed that insecurity and bad image of the destination, poor marketing and
promotion, lack of basic infrastructure, lack of trained human resource are factors affecting geotourism
