Abstract
Participatory appraisal and conventional veterinary investigation methods were applied to
\alidate Barana pastoralists' knowledge on cattle disease and to investigate the epidemiology of
Foot and Mouth disease ( Ft\lD), respe-ctivcly in Barana pastoral production system of Southern
Ethiopia. Furthennore, detcnnin3ti oll of seroprevalencc of FMD and assessment of associated
risk factors (including serotyping of the c irculating FMD vims) were conducted. The
participatory methods used were clinical observation. matrix scoring, proportional piling. and
seasonal calendars. Seroepldcmiological investigations were perfomlcd using JABC ELISA a nd
liquid phase blocking ELISA techniques.
The analysIs of matrix sconng showed good level of agreement (\\"- 0.569·0.956) among {he 12

The results of 3 ABC ELISA and Pa sto rali sts' empirical knowledge of FMD showed a mod erate
agreement (kappa=0.45), indicating that FMD is an important cattle disease in Borana pastoral
production system 10 warrant the institution of appropriate cont rol strategy_
