Abstract

Understanding the groundwater availability is very important to plan, develop and manage the water resources sustainably. In Addis Ababa city the impact of land use land cover change on groundwater recharge was not well studied previously. Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate the land use land cover changes that occurred for the last two decades and its impact on ground water recharge in Addis Ababa city. Land use land cover classification has been carried out in the year 2000 and 2020 using Arc GIS. Besides, WetSpass-M model has been simulated two times for the year 2000 and 2020 using similar input data but in the case of land use land cover data was given the respective years. Addis Ababa city has received a loge-term average of 1115.7 mm rainfall. Based on the module output recharge was decline. In the case of 2000 model simulation 160.9 mm or 14.3 % from annual precipitation was turn in to recharge which is equivalent to 82,219,000 cubic meters (Mm3) for Addis Ababa city (with in the area of the city about 511 km2). But this percent was decline to 9.26 % from the annual mean precipitation was turn into ground water recharge for the year 2020 simulation which is equivalent to 103.3 mm or 52,786,000 cubic meters (Mm3) with the same city area (511 km2). In both simulation 88 % recharge was occurred during kiremt /rainy seasons while 12 % of recharge was occurred in bega /dry season. WetSpass was successfully simulated spatial and temporal differences of ground water recharge and the assessment of land use land cover changes was also don very effectively using Arc GIS and ERDAS software’s
