Practices and Challenges of Clinical Supervision in Bole Sub City Government Secondary Schools of Addis Ababa City Administration

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to asses and examines the practice and challenges of clinical supervision at Bole sub city government secondary schools in Addis Ababa city administration. Descriptive survey research design was used to explore the practice and challenges of clinical supervision. Quantitativeresearch approach was applied. The research samples were composed of 40Supervisors, 117 teachers 4 sub city secondary school supervisors and 2 sub city senior expertise from 5 government secondary schools and sub city education office. School principals, sub city secondary school supervisors and sub city senior expertise were selected by using purposive sampling technique, where as teachers and department heads were selected with simple random sampling technique. 3 types of questionnaire and 6 semi structured interview were used to collect data.. Of the 157questionnaire distributed to teachers and supervisors 135 were correctly rated and returned. So, the response rate was 86%. Statistics package for social science (SPSS Version 20) was used to process the data. It was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequently, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The finding revealed that the practice of clinical supervision was done in a low level and the role of supervisors’ was done in a rare extent. In addition the finding also showed that the practice of clinical supervision and the extent to which Clinical supervision is used as a means of improving teachers’development had their own challenges to do the tasks appropriately, such as supervisory commitment, competence etc. From the findings, it was concluded that the low level practice of clinical supervision, ineffective, and inefficient exercise of practices clinical supervision might negatively affect the achievement the desired goal. More over secondary school supervisors should maintain and improve the practice of clinical supervision by creating positive relationship with teachers through building high level of trust and confidence Supervisorsought to exercise clinical supervision step by step on combination efficiently and effectively by organizing, taking management development and supervisory programs.
