dc.description.abstractThe teaching of French as a foreign language (FLE) in Ethiopia is rooted in a specific historical context, shaped by longstanding diplomatic ties with France and a significant French presence in the early 20th century. Today, despite the predominance of English, French maintains an important role in some educational and cultural institutions, particularly at the Alliance Éthio-Française (AEF) in Addis Ababa. The Alter Ego A1+ textbook, widely used across Alliances Françaises worldwide, serves as the primary learning tool for beginners. However, its content, deeply embedded in a Western European cultural context, may present limitations in culturally distinct environments such as Ethiopia. This study aims to explore how this textbook can be adapted or contextualized to better address the linguistic and cultural needs of Ethiopian learners at AEF. Using a qualitative and exploratory methodology—including questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and observations—the research gathers insights from students and teachers regarding their experience with Alter Ego A1+. The findings indicate that, although the textbook offers clear pedagogical advantages, its adaptation is necessary to enhance motivation, improve comprehension, and strengthen cultural relevance among learners. The study thus offers practical suggestions for pedagogical and cultural adaptation to make FLE instruction more relevant, engaging, and effective in the Ethiopian context.
