dc.description.abstractCritical Discourse Analysis on President Sahlework Zewde‟s Inaugural Speech. Gesit Assegidew Addis Ababa University, 2019 Political speeches used to communicate the political ideology or political agenda. This study critically analyses the critical discourse of political addresses namely, the Inaugural Speech of President Sahlework Zewde that delivered on Oct 25, 2018. In carrying out the analysis, Norman Fairclough three-dimensional analytical model has adopted. Based on Fairclough model of CDA the speech was subjected to description (text analysis), interpretation (processing/analysis) and explanation (social practice and analysis) Moreover, it explicates the terms like social, political inequalities in the light of inaugural speech and framework. The study made use of qualitative research design. Data for the study drawn from selected representative excerpts stated in President Shellwork Zewde‟s inaugural Speech. The result of the study found out that the inaugural speech is a revelation of plan by the president intends to operate. In addition to this, the results showed the importunacy of good governance, strengthening of enteral relations, true democracy, working on unity and working enteral and external peace, ensuring women‟s empowerment, working on gender equality. The results of the keyword analysis also have shown that the most prominent words employed by the president are peace, unity and women, and an overall dominance of the personal pronoun we, and which are an evidence of president‟s inclusive perception of the Ethiopian society and a need for unity, understood as necessary in the time of disunity. Modality choices used in the selected speech shed more light on the Principles and power relations in the text; the end drive of which is to characterize the speaker as optimistic and to make reference of particular and shared responsibilities in running of the new government office.en_US
