Abstract
The vast majority of GM planting has been used to increase productivity through improved insect resistance, and/or herbicide tolerance. To grow and consume GM crops, it is important to create public awareness. The current global food security problem is partly due to low productivity of crops due to insect pests, diseases and other a biotic factors. Farmers should have to be aware and cultivate GM plants/crops because; GM crops have been proven to increase productivity and contribute to solve the problem of hunger in the world. The level of awareness of the community on GM plant is not assessed in Dedo district of Jimma Zone, Oromia Regional state, Ethiopia. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate public perception of genetically modified plants/crops in the study area. Cross-sectional (descriptive) study design, non-probability which is (purposive) sampling techniques was used. Both primary and secondary source of data along with qualitative and quantitative data research approach was used. Target respondents who can have the potential to grow GM crops (farmers), persons who can consume, if GM crop if available and person who can have interest to buy and sell if GM crop is available were selected and asked, this include 100 farmers, 100 consumers, and 100 traders, totally 300 individuals were selected as target respondents, from this three hundred respondents, 80% of them are male, the rest are female respondents. 78 % of respondents reported that as they were lacks awareness toward GM crops we can deduce that most of community members do not have adequate knowledge about GM crops in the district hence: there is need for sensitization on GM crops before their release to public. Beside this action in order to solve the above problems formal or informal education is the best solution to create more aware citizens toward GM crops
