Assessment of E-Waste Management in Selected Government Offices in Addis Ababa: The Case of Kirkos Sub City

Abstract
E-waste is a global, interregional, and domestic problem. E-waste management is a challenging
task not only due to its speedily increasing volume but more outstandingly because of its effect
on healthy and the environment. The objective of the study was to assesses level of awareness,
attitude and practice on e-waste management and examine the influence of demographics, sociocultural and institutional factors that affect the perception on e-waste management at selected
government office level in Kirkos sub city. The data were collected from 367 selected
government office employees, which Kirkos sub city were selected by using purposive sampling
technique based on the closeness of my working area. stratified random sampling was employed
where type (Office managers, government experts, and government employees) were taken as
strata are the actors that purposely selected. six people who interviewed in EPA and EFCCC
were found relatively small in size and live in scattered areas, I used random sampling method.
Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics such as t- test, Pearson chi-square, correlation
and Logistic regression model were used to predict the relationship between predictors
(independent variables and dependent variables. The descriptive findings show that there is lack
of awareness on e-waste management at government office level and photocopiers, printers,
laptops, desktops, Computer accessories, TV/Radio, modems constitute the major waste
generated by the selected government offices. Though most offices have temporary storage in
their office, they did not store wastes separately based on its type. Disposed of e-wastes in
unauthorized sites by the employees practiced in Sub City. The inferential analyses show, that,
employees age, educational level, location, access to collectors and disposal site service for ewaste are the major factor that affect the government office employees’ awareness, attitude and
practice of e-waste management. Moreover, the qualitative analyses, using the interview data,
show that disposal site, lack of rule, lack of collector, manpower and facilities like container are
the other factors. For government office employees facilitating awareness creation programs,
prepare rules and regulations and attention to disposal site and collation system are
recommended as a solution.
