Abstract
Background: - GWG refers to the weight gained from beginning of pregnancy until delivery. It is crucial for the wellbeing of the mother & the fetus & inadequate weight gain can pose significant risks to both. Inadequate weight gain is linked with LBW & premature delivery. Excessive weight gain is associated with macrosomia & cesarean section among other complications. Therefore, weight monitoring in pregnancy is an essential aspect of preventive care during pregnancy.
Objective: - To evaluate the patterns & factors influencing gestational weight gain in women having ANC in selected hospitals in Addis Ababa.
Research Methods: - A cross-sectional study design was implemented in a study period of 6 months, & 361 partakers were involved making reply rate of 97%. The collected data underwent thorough checks for completeness, consistency, clarity, & missing values. Data entry was performed using SPSS version 25 for data management & statistical analysis. A 95% confidence intervals was utilized & statistical significance was set at a p-value of less than 0.05 was used to analyze the correlation betweenoutcome&independent variables.
Result: - The average weight gain for underweight women in the pre-pregnancy period was 11.78 kilograms, for those with normal weight was 11.15 kg, for mothers’ overweight was 9.41 kg & for obese women was 8.35 kg. Fifty-two percent of them had inadequate weight gain, 22% had excessive weight gain & 26% had normal weight gain. The determinant of normal weight gain were age of ≥35 years compared to those of age 18-24 years (AOR=5.1), residence out of Addis Ababa in contrast to those residing inside Addis Ababa (AOR=8.4), having achieved a minimum DDS (AOR=4.1) & normal pre-pregnancy BMI (AOR=0.42).
