Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the major successes and challenges of using social
media as sources of News; the case of ETV News channel. The study used descriptive research design
to describe the phenomena of successes and challenges of using social media as sources of News.
Both primary and secondary sources of data were applied. In order to accomplish the objective of the
study both questionnaire and interview were used as data collection methods. Questionnaires were
distributed for reporters and editors. Face to face interviews were also conducted with News channel
managers and editor. The study found that social media are used as sources of News under ETV. It
was also identified that Face book and Twitter are the two major social media platforms that used as
sources of News. On ETV, it was found that one of the major challenges of social media is fake News.
The study suggested that the level of investigation of verification and truthfulness of social media as
sources of News should be based on latest software that minimize the verification duration, by using
the best practices of other international media organizations. ETV should implement user generated
content as a sources of New.
