Abstract
This research aims to analyse the practice and challenges of ensuring the developmental rights of
urban refugee children. The study has specific objectives of assessing the developmental needs of
the urban refugee children, the ways their developmental rights are being ensured, the challenges
and barriers associated with ensuring the developmental rights, the strength of the urban refugee
children that would be vital in ensuring their rights and the response of the urban refugee
children regarding the protection of their developmental rights. The research is a qualitative
study applying instruments of data collection such as observation, in-depth interviews, and key
informant interviews. The study followed a case study method. Although there are different types
of case studies, illustrative case study type has been applied. The researcher applied both primary
and secondary data sources. The study area of this research is a Jesuit Refugee Service, an
international non-governmental organization with the only child protection centre that focuses on
refugee children. Purposive sampling was applied to select the participants of the study as the
participants of this study were administrative bodies of these organizations. There was a total of
thirteen participants, both from the services users and organization staff. The findings of this
research indicated that urban refugee children just like any other child possess various
developmental needs and different efforts are being carried out in order to fulfil the
developmental rights of urban refugee children. However, at times both the urban refugee
children and the organization that provides services for them face different social and
institutional challenges. Based on the findings, the researcher has concluded that even though the
efforts to ensure the developmental rights of urban refugee children have shown great strides,
there are concerns that should be given due attention in order to provide quality care for urban
refugee children and ease their transition. Finally, Implications for Social Work practice and
policy makers have been forwarded.
