Abstract
Background: Adolescence involves key changes in physical growth, emotions, and social roles. Adequate sleep is essential for health and emotional stability during this period. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) links poor sleep to lower academic performance and a higher risk of depression. Adolescence is a common period for the onset of depression In Ethiopia, there is limited research on how sleep quality impacts depression, making it crucial to explore these connections further.
Objective: To assess sleep quality and depression among adolescents at secondary schools in Adama city, Ethiopia
Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study design will be employed and multi-stage sampling will be used. A total of 844 adolescents will be participants from the selected schools. Data will be collected through structured, paper-based questionnaires administered through interviews by trained nurses. Data will be analyzed using SPSS version 26.Sleep quality will be measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Depression will be measured using the PHQ-9.Descriptive statistics will be performed to summarize frequencies and percentages for categorical variables and means and standard deviations .bivariate ordinal logistic regression will be conducted followed by multivariate ordinal logistic regression .Additionally, to explore the strength and direction of the relationship between sleep quality and depression, Spearman’s rank correlation will be used
Work plan and Budget: The study will be conducted from October to June .A total of 25,000 ETB will be needed for the completion of the study.
