Abstract
The primary objective of the s tudy is to inves tiga te the phenomenon of
qual ity issues in education in primary school from the teachers' perspec tives
bv using qualitative case study methodology. Teachers teaching in
government primary schools of Nekemte town were the participants of the
s tud y. Da ta were generated via interview and foc us group discussions
from :lineteen purposefu lly selec ted " information-rich" cases ranging in
divers ity. In a ll, 19 tea chers were intervi ewed and three focus group
discussions were held. The data secured through these techniques were
ca tegorized and thematically analyzed . The findings of the study indica ted
that the participants' perceived quality of educa tion in terms of input and
output/ outcomes. The analysis revealed that the primary schools were
s uffering from very poor conditions of learning. Rega rding current status of
quality, the study also found that the quality of educa tion in primary
schools was not promising. Finally, the finding indicated tha t forming of
va rio us co mmittees, continuous assessment, regular meeting, sharing of
experi ence among teachers, preparation of ques tion-answer forum for the
students are the identified s tTa tegy employed by the teach ers to improve
qual ity of educa tion. The need for breaking teachers' problem, provision of
fund, stTengthening parent-school rela tionship, resolving studentdiscip
linary problems and efficient distribution of textbooks timely and in
adeq" ote amount are, thus, found to be the dimensions identified as points
that need interventions.
