Abstract
This study critically examines persistent gender inequalities in news assignment practices within Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) in Ethiopia, reflecting a global pattern where female journalists are often relegated to "soft news" while male counterparts cover "hard news." Employing a mixed-methods research approach, including in-depth interviews, focus group discussions with female journalists, and a questionnaire survey of 31 FBC journalists, the investigation revealed statistically significant gender disparities. A substantial 51.6% of respondents attributed assignment decisions to prevalent gender stereotypes. Female journalists were demonstrably over represented in "soft news" assignments, while male journalists predominantly covered "hard news," including political and investigative reporting. Despite political news constituting a significant 32.3% of FBC's overall coverage, female journalists was consistently underrepresented in these high-profile assignments, irrespective of their qualifications or interest. Qualitative findings further illuminated pervasive gendered expectations within the newsroom and a discernible absence of formal mentorship programs, both impeding women's access to prominent stories. Although some progress in gender representation was acknowledged, the findings unequivocally underscore persistent systemic barriers and a profound lack of equitable opportunities for female journalists in accessing "hard news." The study concludes by emphasizing the imperative for FBC to adopt and rigorously implement more inclusive and transparent editorial policies. It strongly recommends instituting targeted mentorship programs to support the professional development of female journalists, proactively ensuring their equitable opportunities for participation in all domains of news coverage. These interventions are crucial for fostering a more gender-balanced journalistic environment and enhancing the quality and diversity of news content delivered to the Ethiopian public.
