The study has been designed to investigate the causes and consequence of urban ward migration in Ethiopia, by taking Dukem town as a case study. Furthermore, attempts were made to identifY the causes for migration, investigate factors that facilitate migration and to analysis the consequences of migration among the target respondents. The characteristics of the migrants analyzed were; the volume of urban-ward migration; and assess to the socia-economic problems (such as employment, housing, etc.) faced migrants after arrival. To this end, data were collected ji-om a randomly selected sample of 407 respondents using Questionnaire. Focus Group Discussions and Key informant Interviews were also employed along with survey. The main findings of the study include: firstly, the principal factor behind urban-ward migration is the imbalance between urban and rural areas in the level of economic development. Secondly, majorities of the migrants are of rural origin and are dominated by young men and women. Final~y as a result of moving, problems such as shortage of housing, employment and other social services have encountered by migrants. To tackle the problem of urban-ward migration and its consequences, it is suggested that integrated rural development at the place of origin and increasing investments are very important. Providing non-agricultural job opportunities through the expansion of small and medium scale enterprise in the rural areas in particular can reduce the rural to urban migration substantially.en_US
