Abstract
This study investigates the application of Olympism and the Olympic movement among Ethiopian elite athletes and coaches, focusing on the roles of the Ethiopian Olympic Committee (EOC) and the Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF). The research aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to Olympism, identify existing challenges, and propose solutions to enhance its implementation. A descriptive research design was employed, utilizing surveys and interviews to collect data from elite athletes, coaches, and officials from the EOC and EAF of Paris 2024 Olympics. The study population included a representative sample of elite athletes of 27 selected from 56 elite athletes and 7 coaches selected from 13 team coaches, with simple random and purposive sampling method. The data collection instruments of questionnaires and interviews designed to measure their understanding and application of Olympism principles. The results indicate a moderate level of awareness and application of Olympic principles among Ethiopian athletes and coaches. While there is a good understanding of respect and fair play, the practical application of Olympism is limited by insufficient resources, inadequate training, and poor dissemination of information. Specifically, 47.8% of elite athletes and 50% percent of coaches demonstrated a good understanding of Olympism, but many reported not benefiting from Olympic Solidarity programs and being unaware of relevant IOC resources. These findings have significant implications for the promotion of Olympism in Ethiopia. In conclusion, integrating Olympism into Ethiopia's sports culture requires concerted efforts to implement Olympism ideologies, development of athletes and coaches on their fields, support structures and needs better attachments of collaborative works between the sport organizations and sport families. The study’s recommendations provide a roadmap for enhancing the application of Olympism principles, ultimately contributing to the overall development of Ethiopian sports.
