Abstract
Studies have shown that strategy implementation is still a challenge for today’s organizations due to several factors influencing the success of strategy implementation. The purpose of this study is to assess the factors affecting strategy implementation at Ethiopian Airlines by analyzing the relationship between elements of the Eight “S” model that affect strategic implementation and the strategic performance achieved by the airline. The research question, to which the researcher sought an answer, was to assess whether there was a relationship between the seven elements in the Eight ‘S’ mode and the strategic performance of the airline. The study used a survey to gather the quantitative primary data from 265 managers and team leaders of Ethiopian Airlines. The data was then studied using descriptive, correlational and regression analysis on SPSS (version 20). The findings of the study generally agree with earlier studies on strategy implementation. The seven factors considered in the study (the strategy, organizational structure, systems and processes, leadership, human resource/staff, resources, and organization culture) are all found to have a positive correlation with the strategic performance of the airline. Testing of the research hypotheses further has shown that the factors defined as organization culture, leadership, and strategy are found to have a high impact on the strategic performance of the airline. Factors defined as resource and human resource have a relatively lower impact while the impact of systems and processes and organizational structure is found to be insignificant. Based on the findings, to achieve success in strategy implementation, the study recommended giving more emphasis to those factors with a high impact on the success of strategy implementation.
