Abstract
Religion is one of the social institutions which gives direction to the members of any society in their social life and provides guideline and serves as tool of social control. Pro-social behavior is an element of religion and teaching of religion that influences human behavior. This study investigates the relationship between religious experience and pro-social behavior of youth in Kolfe Mekane Yesus Church. It assessed religious experience and pro-social behavior in relation and difference between demographic variables of sex and age. The study was conducted in Kolfe MekaneYesus Church; there are a total of 5000 attendees in church from which registered members of the church are 2000. Out of these, 875 were youth. Out of the total population, 52% were females and the remaining was male members. Stratified random sampling techniques were used to select 133 female and 122 male. The data gathering instrument contain socio-demographic variables, religious Experience Questionnaire (REQ), Pro-social Tendencies Measure Revised (PTM-R). Data analysis techniques for this study were descriptive and inferential statistic, independent t-test, Pearson product moment correlation. The findings of study show the majority of participants have high level of religious experience and pro-social behavior. Concerning sex, statistically significant difference was found between females and males in religious experience of youth. Regarding pro-social behavior of age there was no statistical significant difference. There was statistically significant and positive association between the reported religious experience and pro-social behaviors. Similarly religious experience was significantly and positively correlated with Compliant, Emotional, Anonymous, and Dire pro-social behavior. However, Altruism and Public pro-social behavior have no significant correlation with religious experience.
