Abstract
Ethiopia is one a/the cOllntries with the highest number a/malnourished population in the world This
emanates Fom lack 0/ adequate and balanced diet, prevalence 0/ infectious diseases, socio-economic
drawbacks and sanitmylhygienic problems. Children and women are most affected by the problem. 77,e
paper tried to measure the level 0/ child malnutrition in Nonno Reselliement Site and identifY the
demographic, socio-economic, health and environmental de terminant factors associated with the
phenomenon among children aged 6-59 months as measured by stunting, wasting and underweight.
7his research used a cross-sectional study design and was conductedji'om December 2011- Februmy
2012 in Nanna reselliement site. 771e reselliement site was organized under three administrative
unitslkebeles! Those all three kebeles were selected purposively/or this study. 77,e required sample size
(household~) was determined using the /ormula for estimating single population proportion. The
calculated sample size was allocated proportionally to three kebeles. Simple random sampling
procedure was employed to select the required households Fom the three kebeles. LOllelY method was
used to select only one child Fom one sample household in case 0/ the availability 0/ more than one
child/or anthropometric measurements. In the event household that does not have under-five childlren
the next neighboring household was considered Stl'1lctured and pre-tested questionnaire was used to
collect household socia-economic, demographic. health and environmental data. Anthropometric
measurements 0/ the selected under-jive children were also collected using standard weighing scale and
height measuring board
The resllits show that the overall prevalence o/malnutrition in the community was high with 46.3% 0/
the children stunted, 41.9% underweight, and 11.5% wasted Parental education, wealth status 0/
household, household size, number 0/ under-five children in the household, age 0/ a child antenatal
care allendance, source o/water, availability 0/ latrine and sign a/disease in the past two weeks be/ore
the survey were /ound to be the major determinant factors a/malnutrition among under-five children in
the study area. Therefore, it requires careji.d attention and systematic actions in the areas 0/ food
security, child and maternal healthcare, education and hygienic problems to reduce the existing
malnutrition prevalence in the area.
