Abstract
In thi s stud y an attem pt was made to explore the causes and consequences of sexual violence
aga inst female hi gh school students in Add is Ababa during January to May 2009. The study was
cro ss-sect ional in design. Both qual itati ve through FGD and quantitative through structured
questionnaire were collected. A total of 63 I high sc hool female students were participated in the
stud y, among those (2 I %) experienced sex ual intercourse. among those who did sexual
intercourse (55%) started forcefu ll y/raped. Accord ingly alcohol ic drin ks. verbal threat. false
promise, use of authority and fri ends pressure are the major causes of rape. (37%) of the vic tims
were used alcohol at the time of rape. The result of this study al so reported that (45%) of the
respondents had experienced unwanted sexual advances. According to the study results, age of
fema le students and habit of usin g substances, place of bi rth, living condition, parental marital
condition, parent's education and parent's monthly income have significant assoc iation with
sexual vio lence. The consequences of sex ual violence accord ing to th is result are self blame.
anx iety, fear, alcohol/drug dependency, school drop out. unwanted pregnancy and abortion. To
solve the problem behavioral change of female students. school community and in general the
society is needed.
