Abstract

Population explosion and the associated anthropogenic activities generate huge amounts of different wastes that adversely affect the physical environment of Addis Ababa City. This situation is not different for Aroda Sub-city, which is one of the oldest and the central part of the city, where the concern of this study has focused, The current estimated population of the sub city is 350,000 people, The sub-city has been established as part and parcel of the city in 2003 and has got a wide range of power and various urban service activities to be provided for the residents, Often a discrepancy exists between the growing population and the increasing demand for the urban services on one hand and the capacity of the local government to provide these services on the other hand, This study has focused on, household solid waste management service delivery, one of the urban Services provided by the sub-city and the role of the stakeholders in this particular activity in This study, both quantitative and qualitative descriptions were used to show the performance of The sub-city in delivery of the household solid waste management service, The role and performance of the sub-city 's agent was assessed in terms of the service it provides, institutional and resource capacity, working relations with stakeholders mainly with the MSEs, issues of awareness raising and user participation in the sub-city were attempted to be included. The findings of the study revealed that household solid waste management service in the sub-city is provided below the required quality or has a poor status, According to the survey results, the inadequate organization, lack of material and human resources, unfair distribution of containers, lack of proper support for the private sector, lack of awareness raising and community participation are some of the factors that account for poor solid waste management service delivery in the sub-city delivery in the sub-city. Filially, results of the Study indicate that there is so much to done in order to improve the Service provision. thus , there is need to create driving motives into community to use integrated sustainable sold waste management strategies by promoting public- private partnerships in the area of solid waste management service delivery in the sub-city
