dc.description.abstractThe study was initiated to explore students’ motivation and unwillingness to participate in Physical Education (PE) session in selected government preparatory schools of Addis Ababa. It attempted to access the level of students’ motivation, participation, investigate the major challenges that hindered the motivation and suggest possible solutions. To realize the purpose of the study, descriptive survey design was employed. The study was carried out in Lafto sub city which encompasses three government preparatory schools, particularly at selected preparatory “school 0002” selected using simple random sampling techniques. The study involved 25% (90) students from the total population of 360 students and 4 PE teachers (selected by simple random sampling technique). Frequency count and percentage were used to analyze all the closed-ended questions of the questionnaires and the interview and observation were analyzed qualitatively served as supportive for quantitative data. Based on the analyses, it was found out that, students motivation in physical education session in the preparatory schools was not satisfactory; active students participation were not recorded properly. Additionally, shortage of sport materials, less students’ interest and participation, insufficient teachers utilizing different methods, were found as the highest problems. Moreover, shortage of budget to fulfill those materials that are very important and less attention was given to PE sessions from the administrative body, were also pointed out as the highest problem that influenced students motivation in PE practical session. Accordingly, it is concluded in this study that the students actively participation in PE practical session in the preparatory schools under consideration was less than the expectation and problematic. Finally, the study recommended that; concerned bodies such as Government, school principals, and PE teachers as well, should play the active roll to motivate students and actively participate during PE session.
