dc.description.abstract | This study was conducted to explore effectiveness of ‘Children’s Right Pictorial Booklet’ in awareness raising of children on child rights. Thus it employed reception analysis of children with an objective to find out the meaning children make out of the magazine and how they identify themselves with the stories in the magazine. In the focus group interviews it was also found out that the main place where the magazine is consumed is in class rooms and in homes of the respondents. It was also evident that most of the respondents do not read the magazines purposely. In this study it was also found out that children’s reading habit of the magazine is affected by various factors like children’s lack of knowledge about the magazines availability in school library and those who knew, only went to library to study. In the focus group interview, the main themes of the magazines that are read by respondents are compared to the meaning the respondents make out of the magazine. Hence it was found out that respondents understood the intended meaning transmitted by the magazine. It was also learned that all respondents between the ages of 7-9 like the magazine for its content, Child rights, while respondents between the ages of 13-15 like the magazine for its pictorial and narrative presentation that makes it entertaining and educative. It was also found out that children between the ages of 13-15 have a better understanding of the story told and the pictorial presentation than children between the ages of 7-9. The focus group interview has also been found useful in identifying how children, in terms of gender vary in their interpretation of messages. Generally it was found out that there are different factors that affect children’s reading habit of the magazine and the meaning making of respondents varies mainly due to age and gender. | en_US |
