Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to assess and introduce the history and status
of children's literature in Amharic. The study shows when and how children's books in
Amharic began to be published and conducts a general survey of the development of the
genre during its existence.
The thesis have five sections including the "Introduction" and "Bibliography." The
objectives of the thesis, the criteria the research has undertaken to choose the children's
books in Amharic, the problems encountered during the research, and review ofliterature
are the main points included in the introduction. Chapter one comprises for major
theoretical views of children's literature such as what is Children's literature? who are
children? what is the difference and similarity between children's and adult's literature?
and the use of literature for children. Chapter two surveys the books published for
children in Amharic including the oral folktale tradition and traditional church school
texts. The survey is conducted by dividing the whole publication time into four major
periods, Chapter three, Evaluation of Children's Books in Amharic and
Recommendations, conveys the findings of the research and indicates commendable ideas
helpful to the future development of the genre in Ethiopia in general, and in Amharic in
paI1icular. All children's books published in Amharic are listed in the bibliography section
mammary sources.
The research is the first of its kind because there is no study that deals with
children's literature in Amharic before as exhaustive as this one. Beside it gives an
accomplished bibliographies of children's books published in Amharic till 1984. E.e.
