Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate project Implementation challenges and identify possible remedial actions for projects under carried by a local NGO called TaYA. Despite the different project implementation challenges NGOs in Ethiopia face there is a lack of sufficient published studies that document and address these challenges. Therefore, this study is conducted to contribute towards minimizing this gap. The research design is exploratory and descriptive while the sampling technique is purposive. Participants of the study are all program division staff of the organization and data is collected through in-depth interview, close and open-ended questionnaires and document analysis. The analysis is done qualitatively by relating the results with literatures and quantitatively using percentage, frequency and mean. The findings of the study revealed that lack of top management commitment, uncontrolled change to baseline requirement, lack of communication, inadequate tracking and directing of project activities, lack of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) system, high uncertainty, lack of accountability & completion criteria, CSO 70/30 policy, schedule pressure, being kept uninformed, unclear expectation, none collaborating functional areas, and staff turnover were the serious challenges the organization face during project implementation. These data support the view that TaYA is vulnerable to most of the challenges due to the traditional approach it adopts for project implementation and its high dependability on donors from abroad. Therefore, to alleviate these prevailing implementation challenges the organization should adopt a standard Project Management (PM) methodology for its projects, diversify funding partners, and conduct need assessment of beneficiaries. Furthermore, it needs to adopt well-structured communication strategy and invest more on the capacity building of its staff.
