Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the teacher’s assessment approaches in physical education session on selected secondary schools of Hadiya Zone. The study sought to gain an understanding of the extent to which teachers use different assessment approaches and tools to understand and support the learning and teaching processes of physical education. The study involved two secondary schools which were simple random sampling selected from seven secondary schools. The research design used a mixed research approach. The samples of the study were taken from Mishduna and Dansahafule secondary schools comprised 120 students,8 physical education teachers and 2principals were included as sample. Simple random sampling method was used to select the students and physical education teachers, while purposive sampling method was used to select the school principals. The data were gathered through questionnaire, observation and interview. The study incorporates both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The data which were collected through questionnaire were analyzed by using frequency, percentage and SPSS software versions 20. The data gathering through open ended questions, interview and observation were analyzed qualitatively through narrations for the purpose of triangulation. As the findings of this study revealed that the basic factors that affect the teachers’ assessment techniques are: lack of training, lack of materials and equipment’s to assess their students in teaching physical education sessions, teachers’ assessment techniques in physical education, assessment methods that teachers used to measure their students, and no clear assessment guidelines. The following recommendation were forwarded: The provision of practical training on the use of assessment techniques, the preparation of assessment guidelines for physical education teachers, fulfilling necessary materials and equipment’s’ for effective practice of assessment techniques and the schools have to support physical education teachers for the implementation of assessment.
