Impact of Primary School Feeding Upon Enrollment, Attendance, and Dropouts: The Case of South Wollo Zone in Amhara Regional State

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of school f eeding upon enrollment, attendance and dropout of students in Amhara Regional State, the case of South Wallo zone. The method of the study was case study method. The subjects in this study were 29 teaches, 274 students, 3 principals, 2 supe rvisors 2 focal persons, 10 parents of students who are in the school feeding beneficiary sites and 6 woreda educational personnels. Data were collected through questionnaire, interview, focus group discussion, and observation checklists. Documents w e re consulted regarding data analysis. Pe rcentages were used for some data and qualitative data were analyzed qualitatively by the interpretation and description of respondents ideas. The findings of the s tudy showed that school feeding has a positive impact in the teaching leaming process by increasing enrollment, stabilizing attendance, reducing dropouts and making students concentrate in the classroom. Parents are highly interested to send their children t'o school for the s ake of feeding; s tudents also prefe7Ted f eeding beneficiary schools. The study also showed that school feeding has some negative impacts like ove rcrowding of students in the feeding schools and as a result overload on time, mate rial and human resQurces appeared . Based on the findings of this study, school feeding program should include additional sites, and the food s hould be dive rsified, the Ministry of Education and the Regional Govemment should plan to support school feeding locally to s trengthen the access of s tudents to primary education.
