Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the coverage of environmental issues in the Oromia
Television News. In the study, specific news which was transmitted in six months out of a year
(2003) was examined.
In order to achieve the main objective of the study, content analysis was employed as the major
research tool. Moreover, as supportive method and to develop the data, interviews were
conducted from March 2004 to May 2004 with the sampled Oromia Television News room
editors and reporters. Therefore,the researcher employed quantitative content analysis as a major
method and qualitative interview as suportive method .Besides, simple random sampling method
was employed to select six months out of the year.
In the study, the data which were gathered through content analysis in the sampled six months
were presented in the form of the table with frequency and percentage. Finally, this data were
analyzed quantitatively. Furthermore, the data obtained from conducted interview were analyzed
qualitatively.
Finally the findings of this study revealed that Oromia Television News gave a relatively small
amount of coverage on environmental issues. More coverage was given to other issues such as
agriculture, politics, foreign news and others, respectively.Environmental issues such as
population growth, pollution, biodiversity and global warming were presented rarely. Usually
event oriented stories were covered relatively and no investigative about environmental issues in
the study sample. And the findings of the study also revealed that most of environmental sources
were obtained from the government sources rather than using diversified sources; and finally the
study revealed that the prominence given to environmental issues was low relatively.
