dc.description.abstract | Background: Protecting people against catastrophic medical expenses is a means to ensure equity in health. Health insurance is a means to raise and pool funds to finance health services. Ethiopia approved compulsory social and community-based health insurance schemes. The implementation of social health insurance was delayed due to fear of low acceptance by the public servant. Objective: To assess willingness to join and pay for the social health insurance scheme and identify factors associated among teachers in Bahirdar city, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used to recruit 488 teachers. Multiple logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with teachers' willingness to join. The interval data logit was used to determine mean willingness to pay and predictors of willingness to pay. Result: 337 (70.21%) of the respondents expressed their willingness to join and pay 2.46% of their monthly salary. Those who were married were 54% less likely to be willing to participate. Absence child aged <5 year, absence of acute illness in last one year and absence of chronic illness were factors negatively affecting the decision to join the scheme. Willingness to pay was significantly and positively associated with family size and the presence of acute illness. Conclusion: More than half of the participants were willing to join the scheme with a mean premium contribution of 2.46% of their monthly salary. This is an important policy implication in revising the premium amount. | en_US |
