Abandoned children are considered as among the vulnerable group of the society; because, they are deprived from family environment through means of rejection or physically abandoned by their own parent or caregiver. The practice of child abandonment mainly violates child right to life, survival and the right to development which has a grantee under CRC, ACRWC and FDRE constitution. It is the main social problem for a long time, especially in Addis Ababa. Most abandoned children in Ethiopia faces high rate poverty, less access to education and labour exploitation. The study mainly identified that, despite the constitutional guarantee for all child right, the Ethiopian legislation are not adequately address the issues of abandoned child in the protection of their right to grow and cared by own family and the right to get alternative child care. In addition, they stay in a bad situation within the care institution until transfer to new foster or adoptive family. Due to such identified legal and practical problems, the study recommended to revise the current legislations in line with the best protection for abandoned child and provide capacity building for parents and child care institutions in order to mitigate the number of abandoned children within Addis Ababa.en_US
