Abstract

In the Ethiopian road construction industry, cost overruns, schedule delays, lower quality, and scope changes occur in two out of three projects. Most of the road construction projects in Ethiopia are undertaken by ERA. Various researchers have conducted the research in the company in relation to project success, despite that the difficulties persist. Of the projects that ERA worked on, variations in scope affected 27.6%, variations in schedule affected 79.8%, and variations in cost affected 67.2% of the overall project. Hence, detailed further study is required in the industry regarding the factors affecting project Success. Thus, this project research work is to determine the factors influencing project success. An extensive literature review identified 8 project management related factors influencing project success, and 7 barriers to project success. Primary and secondary data sources were utilized to gather data, and a descriptive and explanatory research design was employed. Both qualitative and quantitative research approaches were used to collect and analyze data. A total of 80 respondents participated in the study by applying census sampling. The data collected through questionnaires was analyzed quantitatively using SPSS version 26, while the data collected through interviews was analyzed qualitatively by using manual approach. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to describe respondents' demographic characteristics, factors influencing project success, and barriers to project success. The descriptive analysis indicates the influence of the factors Leadership, Monitoring and control, planning and scheduling, and Clear objectives and Scope have high average. In order to determine the strength of relationship between dependent and independent variables, correlation analyses were conducted, and its results depicts that the independent variable Monitoring and control has extremely large relationship with the project success, and Leadership, Clear objective and scope, planning and scheduling, communication, and Decision making Process have a strong relationship with the project Success. In order to determine the influence of independent variables on progress success multiple regression analysis has been conducted. Its results indicate that all the eight factors have significant effect on project success putting planning and scheduling factor first with greatest effect on Project success. The study recommended that the Industry should prioritize improving the clarity of objectives and scope, enhancing monitoring and control, and refining planning and scheduling to increase the project's success rate. Key Words: Project, Project Management, Project Success, Success factor, Barriers
