Abstract

The objective of this study is to assess the mediating role of employees’ computer self-efficacy in the relationship between the employees’ perceived ease of use and their attitude towards the Enterprise Resource Planning system used by taking employees of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia as an illustration. In the course of the study, a descriptive analysis of the levels of the three variables; perceived ease of use, computer self-efficacy, and attitude towards the use of the Enterprise Resource Planning system was also made. To address the study’s objective, both descriptive and explanatory research designs were employed, while the research approach is entirely quantitative. The sample was drawn from the total population of the employees of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia by targeting those employees who have exposure to the Enterprise Resource Planning system in one way or the other. Accordingly, a sample of 388 employees was taken from a population of 12, 453 employees by using the multi-stage cluster sampling method. Questionnaires and document analysis were used as data collection instruments. The data obtained through the questionnaire has been analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics: frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, as well as inferential statistics, was employed. The findings of the study were found to be as follows; the descriptive statistics of the variables of the study were found to be more positive as they are all above 3 points in the 5-points Likert scale. Factors like computer self-efficacy and perceived ease of use were found to have a direct linear effect on the employees’ attitude towards Enterprise Resource Planning system use. Moreover, perceived ease of use has a direct linear relationship with the employees’ computer self-efficacy. Besides, computer self-efficacy is found to be a partial mediator in the relationship between perceived ease of use and employees’ attitude towards Enterprise Resource Planning system use. Hence, one can conclude that the nature of employees’ attitude towards Enterprise Resource Planning system use significantly depends on those factors included as antecedents of it in this particular study. The power of the variables in explaining the variation in the employees’ attitude towards Enterprise Resource Planning system use was found to be meaningful compared to those previous studies’ reports. Thus, the researcher would like to suggest some helpful ways to improve employees’ attitude towards Enterprise Resource Planning system use. Accordingly, CBE could engage in those activities that enhance the employees’ perceived ease of use of the ERP system. Such behaviours orientations on the benefits of the system; success stories on the implementation of the system in other organizations and exposing employees to the use of related systems will be beneficial.
