Abstract

The importance of managing green spaces has to be given special consideration in rapidly growing urban areas like Nifas Silk Lafto Sub cites. However, creating and preserving urban green space is extremely difficult for a variety of reasons. This thesis specifically looks at the challenges and opportunities associated with integrated management of urban green areas in Addis Ababa, particularly in Jemo One condominiums inNifas Silk Lafto. The study used data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observation and analyzed it using mixed approachesThe key finding of the study are there are several primary constraints affecting integrated management of urban green spaces.Some of these include low awareness of the society lack of coordination, skilled labor shortage, and budget constraints are taken as the major challenges.Despite the challenges, the study found notable opportunities such as existing rules and regulations, government policies and presence of different stakeholders.The study concluded lack of qualified labor, limited availability of green space, low budget and low priority given to green spaces, low awareness among the locals, and little coordination amongst stakeholders as a major challenges. In order to ensure successful implementation, the study proposes the necessity for a coherent and adequate strategy for managing green spaces. This strategy should include an integrated approach, sufficient institutional support, money, skilled and experienced experts, and stakeholder coordination.
