Abstract
This research explored the news content diversity within the Ethiopian Television (ETV) newsroom, focusing on the coverage of social issues in ETV’s 57 news package. It addresses the challenge of achieving content diversity despite ETV's motto of being the “For the Greatness of Ethiopia” and its obligation to serve all segments of society. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative methods. The goal of the study is to assess the current level of content diversity, identify challenges faced by ETV in achieving diversity, and examine ETV's news editorial policies and guiding principles related to content diversity. The sampling methods used were purposeful sampling and stratified random sampling, with a sample size of 285. The data was collected over a 50-day period from November 1, 2023 to December 20, 2023, with data gathering taking place 2 days per week, for a total of 14 days of News data collection. Findings indicate that while there is 40.82% of coverage of diverse social issues, there are challenges such as underrepresentation, difficulty accessing diverse sources, and ethical concerns regarding portrayal. The research concludes with recommendations for improving ETV's accommodation of diversity in news coverage. Key words: Content diversity. News package, social issues, portrayal.
