Abstract
A descriptive study was carried out with the main aim of assessing the stakeholder practice and its challenges in health related projects undertaken by the quality improvement and assurance office of the St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. The study had a 93.3% response rate with 28 out of the total 30 office staffs having been involved. The data collection was done using a combination of qualitative methods, structured self-administered questionnaires and qualitative data by interviews of key respondents using a semi-structured questions. The data was
further analyzed using statistical software, SPSS version 20 for the quantitative data results in forms of frequencies and percentages which were supported with the qualitative data obtained from interviews and check-lists. The study found that despite the claims of a good stakeholder management practice being carried out in the office by the management the actual result showed that the overall practice was actually poor despite the importance of the proper practice of it in project management. In more details the failure to involve more team members in the stakeholder
identification, engagement and communication process that is amplified by the lack of designated unit for it and the lack of future plans to invest in this area associated with the member’s inability to manage the conflicting demands of stakeholders and failure to identify relevant stakeholders in timely manner were identified as common challenges. It was possible to conclude that the project team is severely lacking the need level of commitment or preparation to properly carry out a strong stakeholder management practice and as such it is recommended the need to put in more focused work in the area with the whole team in mind.
