Abstract
This study aims to produce a critical edition of the Kitāb al-farā’iḍ, a significant text for
understanding Harari heritage, by conducting a comparative analysis of five distinct
manuscripts alongside the widely recognized audio recording of its recitation from the Harari
community. Incorporating both oral and written approach provides a comprehensive and
culturally contextualized edition. The study addresses manuscript variations in structure,
attributions, and orthography through the lens of living oral traditions and external textual
evidence. The final edition offers a uniquely valuable resource for scholars of the Harari
language, Islamic studies, and Ethiopian manuscript traditions, facilitating deeper linguistic and
textual analysis while emphasizing the importance of considering orality in textual editions.
Moreover, by integrating a modern Harari version this work will enhance accessibility, thereby
contributing to the preservation and appreciation of this vital cultural heritage.
