Abstract
In the 21st century, technology is an extremely important aspect of every individual and
organization in the western world. Yet, third-world countries struggle to incorporate technology
in their policy and culture. As a developing country, Ethiopia needs to be able to introduce new
IT projects to society so that the country can assimilate with the world. When managing IT
projects, many challenges occur. Delay in IT projects plays a major part in these challenges.
This research work entails what the causes of delay in IT projects are. The objective of the paper
was therefore, to determine the causes linked to Ethio Telecom's production and the delay in
their IT projects. One hundred sixty four questionnaires were distributed to the employees, to test
hypothesis and the data was finally analyzed using SPSS to generate findings for the research.
The major findings showed that Expansion of functionality, overly optimistic schedules, and
Tension between customers and developers are the main reasons for a delay in IT projects. The
study gave a recommendation to Ethio telecom and other similar organizations to deeply focus
on these three reasons, and also a detailed recommendation is forwarded for the causation
