dc.description.abstractThe insurance industry is important in an economy. The insurance business has stringent laws regarding investments. Previous researches have been conducted in Ethiopia on the determinants of insurance profitability focusing on internal factors and macroeconomic environment, which does not clearly show if there is a specific relationship between investment portfolio and profitability of the insurance industry. Hence, the objective of this study is to examine the relationship between investment portfolio and profitability of insurance companies in Ethiopia. The study adopted a descriptive and explanatory research design. The main source of data is secondary data from the National Bank of Ethiopia. The study used a panel data gathered systematically over a period of time in order to answer a research question. Nine private insurance companies are selected purposefully and others excluded since they are not involved in one or more of the variables under investigation. The study covers 9 years non-life insurance operation for the year 2008 to 2016.The study conducted a correlation and regression analysis using SPSS in order to determine the relationship between investment portfolio and profitability of private insurance companies in Ethiopia. The findings of this study is on the relationship between investment portfolio variables and the profitability of the insurance companies, therefore, the study concluded that there is a positive and significant relationship between investment in equity share and the profitability in the private insurance companies in Ethiopia, and it has a positive effect on the profitability of the private insurance companies in Ethiopia. Further, with regard to investment in bank deposit, the study concluded that it has a positive relationship with the Ethiopian private insurance companies profitability, and also an investment in bank deposit has a positive effect on the profitability of the private insurance companies in Ethiopia. Furthermore, the study also concluded that investment in real estate has a positive and significant relationship with the profitability of the insurance industry; however, an investment in real estate has an insignificant effect on the profitability of the private insurance companies in Ethiopia.en_US
