| dc.description.abstract | The main objective of this study was to examine informal trading, municipal governance, and local economic development in Addis Ababa in the case of Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-City. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining survey, interview and field observation to obtain qualitative and quantifiable data. Finally, the study revealed that informal trade is a dominant phenomenon in Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-City, Addis Ababa, where most of it occurs in public spaces such as pavement, marketplaces, and bus terminals. It provided a livelihood source, as the majority of respondents (above 72 per cent) earned their full income from it, providing for a number of families. Informal trade is thus contributing to the alleviation of poverty. However, there are a number of problems faced by traders in the informal sector, such as legal exclusion, constraints of access to finance, lack of infrastructure and unpredictable and often antagonistic relations with governance. Their role in decision-making is also quite negligible.
