| dc.description.abstract | The organic solid waste that is produced and disposed of from households in Addis Ababa accounts for around 60% of the total waste being disposed of, where this is a huge amount of waste that can be composted for agricultural use. It shows a good opportunity to practice organic solid waste composting in order to reduce waste dumped at landfills and provides a sustainable waste management option and translates into economic good through composting for agricultural use in cities. Even though there is a large resource of organic solid waste that can be converted to usable resources through composting, the practice in most cities of developing remains at an infant stage. Therefore, the objective of this study is to discuss the Challenges and opportunities of composting organic solid waste and its implication in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In order to achieve the research objective, a cross-sectional study was applied to collect quantitative data from 125 households in Addis Ababa, Bole sub city woreda 01 and 02. In addition, focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) were conducted with community representatives and government officials, respectively. The quantitative data collected through the survey was analyzed using SPSS 27 to determine and identify the relationship between the variables that influence the practice of composting organic solid waste at the household level. The study indicated that the practice of composting organic solid wastes at the household level is very low. Analysis of the survey data shows only 16% of the respondents in the study used organic solid waste compost as fertilizer in their homes, while the rest claimed they don’t use it at all. Therefore, there is a high need for interventions by authorities, agencies, and social communities to promote the practice of composting by providing awareness, technical and skill training and also strengthening the linkage between associations that produce compost and facilities that demand the use of organic compost for better market and environmental protection. The role of composting organic solid waste to improve urban agriculture and soil fertility should be given higher consideration and used to provide a sustainable solid waste management option that is environmentally friendly. | |
