A Comparative Framing Analysis of Ethio-Eritrean Reconciliation Process Coverage on Ethiopian Television (ETV) and Eritrean Television (ERI-TV)

| dc.description.abstract | This study aimed at a content analysis of how ETV and ERI-TV framed Ethio-Eritrean reconciliation process on their online news coverage from June 5, 2018, to September 30, 2018. A total of 113 news were analyzed from both media, in order to determine the coverage and framing used. The website‟s original languages were used Amharic (ETV) and Tigrigna (ERI-TV). For ETV news ETV 57 Amharic evening news and for ERI-TV news Tigrigna evening news were taken for the study considering they are prime-time news. The research employed both quantitative and qualitative methods as a principal method to analyze the contents of the news. Based on the research questions and the theoretical framework of framing and agenda setting theories the study found that ETV devoted relatively more coverage for the reconciliation process compared to ERI-TV, which share 57.5 percent and 43.5 percent, respectively. This implies that ETV paid significant coverage for the reconciliation compared to ERI-TV. The length of duration given to the reconciliation was also better in ETV than ERI-TV. The findings also revealed that appearance of news stories in ERI-TV were presented in the first position, while ETV presented in the above fifth position. The findings also show that ETV presented the news in a more positive tone than ERI-TV; in contrast, ERI-TV presented the news with more neutral tones. Besides, both media have largely relied on official government sources. Additionally, ERI-TV used peace frame followed by the reassuring frame as the dominate frame, 48 percent and 27 percent respectively, but ETV used 34 percent as peace frame and 23 percent as human interest frame in the reconciliation process. Attribution of responsibility frame was the least frame used in the targeted media outlets. | en_US |
