Abstract
The study aims to examine the performance management practice in Ethiopian Airlines a government owned national carrier of Ethiopia located Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With a concentration on employee perceptions towards performance management practice and the extent of its effective implementation. The Airline permanent employees located at the headquarters are considered as the population and simple random sampling technique was used to determine the sample size. The sampling frame was divided into non-overlapping strata that is the Airline operational divisions in this study and proportional simple random sampling applied to distribute the questionnaires. A descriptive research approach was used by applying qualitative data collection through questionnaires and qualitative data collection from the organizations documents and literature. A total of 388 questionnaires were distributed to the staffs and 348 responded by filling their questionnaire, 89.69 % reply ratio. The variables used are performance planning, execution, assessment, and review. The analysis made using frequencies, mean and standard deviation to describe the statistical results of the study, and presented by using tables. The overall finding of the research shows that the Arline practice is at a good level based on the aggregate mean score for performance planning (4.22), performance execution (3.91), performance assessment (3.71) and performance review (3.77), which was substantiated by the respondent’s more than 70% agreement level. On the other hand, the result also indicates that there is a need for employee performance management system improvement on employee participation in the planning phase; getting regular feedback on performance and updates on goal changes in the execution phase; transparency and impartiality of the evaluation criteria on the assessment phase; and supervisors’ accuracy on rating, organization role in linking rating with rewards and availing training for identified gaps in the review phase.
