Item Assessing the Role of Domestic Religious Tourism Associations for Peace Building in Ethiopia: The Case of Hawire Hiwot Pilgrimages(Addis Ababa University, 2021-04) Tilahun, Beza; Zeleke, Tesfaye PhDThe general objective of the study was to investigate the missing link between domestic religious tourism associations and peace building in Ethiopia. Due to its appropriateness and relevance descriptive were employed. Population of the study comprised of travel organizers, center coordinators, preachers, Hawire Hiwot pilgrims travel in different sites from Addis Ababa head office of Mahebere Kedusan and stakeholder. For this research, purposive sampling was used to pick the sample from travel managers, travel planners, and preachers who had huge experience of involving in Hawire Hiwot travel packages and staffs who directly and indirectly take part in managing the travel and stakeholder in the field. Out of 20,000 pilgrims travelled on per a single trip, the researcher selected travelers who made trip more than 3 times to get plenty information since participant observation was not possible due to Covid 19. And 200 of them had track record of travelling more than 3 times as pilgrims in different religious sites. The primary data were collected through questionnaire and semi-structured interview. Secondary data were collected from both published and unpublished sources such as books, journals, unpublished reports and internet sources. Core findings of the study are domestic religious tourism associations have roles in peace building of a country by promoting tolerance, acceptance and resolving conflicts in peaceful manner. In relation to building peace at the destination areas the research revealed that Hawire Hiwot has low impact on the peace building process of the destination area. Therefore, it is recommended that the association should enlarge its focus areas of work using religion as the means to social transformation and the plat forms for engaging need to be so interactive. The association has to involve in all sorts of peace-building activities, including advocacy, education, inter-faith and intra-faith dialogue, mediation, observation and transitional justice actors.Item Exploring the State of Environmental Courts and Tribunals in Ethiopia: The Case of Addis Ababa City Administration(Addis Ababa University, 2021-02) Tesfaye, Etsegenet; Zeleke, Tesfaye PhDThe objectives of this study were to explore the implementation of environmental protection laws under Federal regular courts in Addis Ababa. The research followed mixed research approach. The data was collected using descriptive research tool, questionnaire with close and open ended questions. And for the qualitative research design, semi structured interview was used to collect feedbacks from FFIC, FHC, EFCCC legal service directorate, AEPGDC attorney, AAU law school environmental law scholars(instructors). Courts play very significant role in attaining environmental justice and thereby, contribute to sustainable development. Despite the fact that their role is indispensable, regular court functioning in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia were not implementing the existing environmental laws and regulations that are set out to protect the environment. Different factors such as, awareness of the society to bring environmental cases to court, the regular court set up how it sees environment cases, lack of experts who have specialization on environment law, non-suitable procedural outlets to bring environment cases to court of law, the very dynamic nature of environment case summed up with the country’s desperate economic need let enforcement of environment law difficult. This exacerbates environment risks such as increased pollution, biodiversity loss, and lacks of implementation of Environmental Impact Assessment by giant industries. The study also assessed state of implementation of national environmental protection laws, tried to analyze the practices and the operation of regular courts in Addis regarding environment cases, assessed perception of legal experts on environmental court establishment and identified opportunities of establishment of environmental courts in Addis Ababa. Based on the analyzed data, existing environmental laws and regulations were found to be not enforced. Different factors such as non-suitability of the regular court setup, low level of societies awareness of their environmental rights, nonsuitable procedural out lets to initiate environmental dispute case to court were raised. Judges and public prosecutors almost unanimously supported the establishment of a Bench under the regular court structure. While both environment protection organs, opted for having environmental tribunal accountable to FFEPC thereby have designed draft proclamation by June 2020, AAU law school environment law instructors advised on the specialization whatever modality it will have.Item Holy Trinity Cathedral of Addis Ababa: Its Museum, Heritages, Attractions and Tourism Product Development Challenges(Addis Ababa University, 2021-06) Shibabaw, Girum; Zeleke, Tesfaye PhDThe Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church is ancient and it has the role of the history of our country, as well as it is a significant contributor to the tourism sector. In addition the church was working with kingship (Emperors and priesthood (house of clergies such as local church up to patriarch’s office) by relationship each other. However, the studies were rarely conducted to assess the role of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, specifically the holy cathedral, in the development of our country's tourism sector. This study aims to investigate the Holy Trinity Cathedral’s role in the development of Addis Ababa tourism. The study follows the mixed research method. The data were randomly collected from the visitors by selfadministrated questionnaires in the church's compound. The data were analyzed through descriptive quantitative using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and analyzed. The finding indicated the assessment of Holy Trinity Cathedral of Addis Ababa: its Museum, tourist’s heritages, and attractions and tourism product development and challenges are the necessary of developing tourism products, tourism heritage conservation, and tourism promotion activities. Based on the findings, various recommendations (to government, NOG, Diocese office of Addis Ababa and local community) were provided for concerned stakeholders to enhance the church's role in tourism development and minimize the discovered challenges
