Item Exploring the Tourism Potentials In and Around Debre Libanos Monastery, North Shewa, Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06) Beyene, Fanta; Zeleke, Tesfaye (PhD)This thesis is intended to explore tourism potential in and around Debre Libanos Monastery. To achieve the objectives the researcher employed qualitative research method. Both primary and secondary data were used to explore the potentials. To collect the primary data, interview and focus group discussions were undertaken with selected community elders, Monastery administrators, government official and other concerned individuals. In addition, deep and continuous personal observation was conducted to fill the gaps of interview and other sources gathered from various literatures. The analysis of the study revealed that Debre Libanos Monastery has huge natural, cultural, spiritual and historical tourism potentials. Among these the natural potentials are plants, animals, landscapes. There are also various cultural heritages such as artifacts, buildings, songs, cultural food, holy water and others. Even though the Monastery has these tourism potentials and diversified values, they have not yet been developed and utilized due to various impeding factors such as lack of awareness about the tourism potentials, lack of tourist facilities, accommodations, limited budget to promote, scarcity of skilled man power, legal frameworks and gaps in heritage conservation are among the factors that hinder tourism development of the area. Therefore, it is recommended that there is need to promote the potentials and collaboration of the administrations of the monastery with different stakeholders such as Debre Libanos Woreda and North Shewa Zone Culture and Tourism Offices, local people, private sector and agriculture offices as all are responsible to develop and exploit tourism potentials of the study area. The absence of empirical work on this title including the role and challenges the club encountering has not been investigated. The overall objective of this study was to assess Practices and Predicaments of “Know-Your-Country’’ Club for Domestic Tourism Development in Kolfe Keranio Sub City. Methodologically, the philosophical view of this study was pragmatism that opens doors for application of multiple methods including quantitative and qualitative approach. Both probability and non-probability sampling techniques, including purposive, convenient and simple random sampling were employed to generate data. In this study, both open and close-ended questionnaires were designed and distributed for 294 respondents to capture the background of the respondents, and also conducted interview with manager of club and experts from concerned body. The result revealed that the main objective of “Know-Your-Country’’ club in Kolfe Keranio Sub City is traveling to new destinations and creating awareness for local community about domestic tourism. “Know-Your-Country’’ club is playing significant role for the development of domestic tourism activities and increase the culture of travel in the society. The host communities such as: tour guides, ticket sellers, reception, and manager of areas in selected tourism destinations were also assessed in this study. The result indicates that few of “Know-Your-Country’’ club members are participating in host community activities including; social service and environmental conservation. However, the clubs are faced financial, human resource, integration and training problem. To reduce this challenges and problems the concerned body like Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ethiopian Tourism Organization, host community and other stakeholders should work in collaboration. Their choice of a given tourism destination partly depends on the information they have about it. Addis Ababa is one of the tourist destinations in Ethiopia with a lots of tourism potential. This study assessed the tourist sites that the mass media promote, their influence on tourists, and the challenges the mass media faced in promoting the tourist sites. A cross-sectional descriptive research design was applied. Both qualitative and quantitative (mixed) approaches were used. Both primary and secondary sources were used. 384 tourists by convenience sampling from the selected tourist sites in Addis Ababa and six key informants by purposive sampling from mass media, the Addis Ababa tourism bureau, and the tourism minister participated in this study. The study found that Entoto Park is a highly promoted tourist site in Addis Ababa in the mass media. However, the Holy Trinity Cathedral is the one that is not given that much attention in the mass media. In addition, the study found mass media promotion of tourist sites had an influence on tourists' decisions to visit the sites and to frequently talk about the promoted sites and to some extent to develop business relationships with the sites and carry out research on them. Mass media was the major source of information for people who were visiting the selected tourist sites in Addis Ababa. The study also found that mass media face many challenges among which sponsorship is the major one. This is due to a shortage of support from the concerned stakeholders such as the Minister of Tourism. As Ethiopia makes tourism a pillar of development, the minister has to give support to the mass media.Item Tourism Development and Management Program Collaboration of Stakeholders’ Operation for Tourism Development: Evidences from Nekemte Town As A Tourist Destination in Western Oromia, Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06) Gudina, Etefa; Zeleke, Tesfaye (PhD)Nekemte town in Western Oromia is endowed with abundant natural and manmade attractions which can draw attention of both domestic and international tourists. Empirical review reveals that scholars have made their effort in studying the problem of lack of collaboration among stakeholders for tourism development in Ethiopia. However, problem of lack of coordination remained in air and is impeding the tourism development in the study area because most scholars tried to pinpoint the problems at the national level and in some areas which are not similar with study area in many settings. As a result, the central theme of this thesis deals with collaboration of stakeholders’ operation for tourism development in Nekemte town. The study followed the pragmatic approach. The research employed the mingle of quantitative and qualitative approach. Both primary and secondary sources of information were used. The analysis followed the descriptive techniques shored up with qualitative data. The research identified stakeholders for tourism development in the study area which include public offices, private organizations, local community and tourists. The findings of the research revealed that g collaboration of stakeholders is weak. The paper also identified benefits of collaboration in the study area which includes resource sharing, awareness creation, promotional works, exploration of tourist attractions, and infrastructural development at the tourist destinations. The other core point of the research findings was barriers of collaboration in the study area which comprise lack of adequate manpower, high turnover of office heads, absence of clear guidelines for collaboration, poor enforcement of rules and regulations, lack of budget, lack of awareness and political unrest in the area. The research results allude to on multitudes of issues. Above all, there is a need to know all the stakeholders with their respective roles. Secondly, the results emphasized the importance of formulation and enforcement of policies and guidelines to bring those stakeholders together. Thirdly, barriers of the collaboration should be tackled by integrating those stakeholders to be beneficiary of the collaboration. Lastly, the study results call for the all inclusive effort to undertake a thorough research in the study area. Attainment of these implications helps in harnessing stakeholders together and comprehends the potential of tourism for development.
