Item Contributing Factors for Female Students’ Attrition in Science Education: The Case of Faculty of Science at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.(Addis Ababa University, 2010-07) Tesfaye, Helen; Subramaniyam, Vijaya (PhD)The need to be part of the globalized science-lead economy on the one hand and ensure social justice on the other necessitated including half of the human race, women. This requires giving special attention not only on the enrollment of female students in science education but also on their retention. To the dismay of the Faculty of Science at Addis Ababa University, despite deliberate and continuous efforts to enroll female students so far, the number of female who graduate has been negligible for the last five years. Therefore, this study examined different factors for female students’ attrition in the faculty. A mixed method of approach was used to gather information on the factors of female students’ attrition by employing quantitative and qualitative methods. This study reports on a result of a survey from 89 randomly selected female readmitted students from six departments. It also reports responses of 11 in-depth interviewees who were drop-outs and readmits and one group of focus group discussion. The respondents returned the field questionnaire about their backgrounds, attitude about science education, and factors that contributed for their attrition. Most are found to have negative attitude towards their ability to study and succeed in science fields especially in physics and mathematics. Low pre- university academic preparation was a factor to most of them. Insufficient and irregular academic support session in the faculty and absence of support and interaction between instructors/advisor and students were cited as factors for their attrition by many. Factors related to unfair grading system, or poor teaching quality in the faculty were cited as a factor by few. Most common reasons for their attrition falls under the following classifications: Socio-psychological factors, academic and support related factors and personal factors, including marriage and health issues. This finding agrees with the existing literature. The study has provided recommendations for the faculty improvement. These include providing sufficient and regular support, continuing evaluation of advisors/instructors, providing tutorial class for students with different or insufficient levels of knowledgeItem An Exploratory Study on Child-Parent Abuse: Nature, Cause and Effect of Abusing Parents by Their Own Children in Gulele Subcity of Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2016-05) Tesfaye, Helen; Mengisteab, Mesele (PhD)Child-Parent abuse is a velY sensitive and complex issue like that of other types of abuses in thefamity. Though, it has received very limited attention and recognitionfrom researchers and concerned bodies. In Ethiopia there are no organized data which shows its prevalence. Creating an mvareness of the problem is essential to provide an adequate help for the victims or to follow up planed intervention methods. To feel this gap, a phenomenological study was conducted based on the lived experience of 1 0 parents (6 mothers and 4 fathers) who are experiencing CPA in Gulele sub city of Addis Ababa. Data were collected using an in-depth interview with this parents and the researcher's observation; and it was analyzed simultaneously with interpretative analysis method. The jinding of the study shows that some parents have suffered a great deal ji-om the various acts of abuses by their own children. In general, it was identified that the abuses includes verbal, physical, andjinancial and material exploitations. The verbal abuse includes, constant insults, threatening to harm, humiliation and demeaning reactions. The jinancial and lIlaterial exploitation or abuse consists of stealing money or parents' belongings, demanding the parent to buy things knowing that they can 't afford and selling possessions of theirs or their parents' and destroying the parents' belongings. And a serious incident fi'om choking and slapping to the use of weapons resulting grave bodily injuries is included under the physical abuse nature of CPA. Because of this parents are suffering stigmafrom their neighbours and fro 111 the society, physical injuries, emotional and psychological problems. It is found out that the abusive Childs' addiction (of alcohol, khat and substance abuse); economic dependency or unemployment, past abusive experience of the parent and negative peer injiuence are the major causes. The parents take reporting the abuse to the police as a last measure after having to deal with it for a long time. All measures the parents took to handle the situation are unsatisfactory to them; because they want ending the abuse not their relationship with their child. Therefore the necessOlY allention and professional response is indispensable.Item Perinatal and Neonatal Health Advisory Support System(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Tesfaye, Helen; Atnafu, Solomon(PhD)This project design and implements mobile a web based perinatal and neonatal health advisory support system. The system will enhance and create awareness about perinatal and neonatal stage. This awareness will be created by including different tools such as advisory, symptom, question and answer and so on. The system allows user to communicate with health officer by asking questions. The user can download the application from the website of the system. The website includes all tools of android phone application. Both mobile and web applications use Amharic language interface. The system use Amharic Language. The usability of the project is tested by 19 users. The result shows that the users are happy with PNHASS application.
